Inspired to finally start a blog…
Today is the Martin Luther King, Jr. 2015 holiday. As I was reading several of his famous quotes this morning, I was inspired to finally start the blog I had been thinking about creating for some time now, but never got around to. This quote struck me among others:
The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be… The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.
Sometimes I feel like an extremist when it comes to learning and education. I also have a dream… a dream that everyone will be able to learn their way, with a freedom to learn that is not constrained by rules that do not fit all or structured in such a way to squash all motivation to learn. Just as the constitution lists our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, I believe we each have a right to learn. We are born to learn… it is an integral part of the purpose of life.
Malala Yousafzai and other girls like her were oppressed by the Taliban, but she vowed to get her education “…if it is in home, school, or anyplace.” Oppression can come in less violent forms, even in the guise of “good schools,” “education reform” and rigid and imposed curriculum. Malala’s vow can be a rallying cry to all of us – even those attending Ivy League schools. We can rise up and request freedom to learn in a way that makes sense for each individual as they see fit.
Martin Luther King Jr. also said,
Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
I’m not sure where this blog will lead, as I “don’t see the whole staircase” just yet. Reading the quotes this morning on this national holiday, I decided to take the first small step towards doing my part in creating a Lifelong Learning Revolution.
Who am I? I am Laura Armer. I am a lifelong self-learner. I am an instructional designer by profession, an online college instructor, online student, and I was an accidental homeschooling mom. I pledge to use my passion and knowledge to empower others to learn their way, on their own terms. My mission is to support learners who want to gain knowledge and skills in unconventional ways. On the other side, I want to support experts and teachers who want to teach in unconventional ways. I consider myself one of the “creative extremists.”
